Bootie Brisbane!

Bootie? A soft, woolen shoe for a baby? A slang term for an attractive rear end? (Thanks Wiki)

Of course not – it’s Brisbane’s all-mashup bootleg party and it’s happening again this Saturday July 4th 2009. Despite accusations before the last party I have no motive behind my enthusiasm for this night other than wanting to see as many people as possible come along.

I think it’s a great night to bring together a bunch of people who don’t want to be subjected to musical swill but don’t all share exactly the same taste in party tunes.

But before I get carried away I think I hear some questions from the back…

What’s a mashup? What’s a bootleg?

What’s a bootleg?
It’s pretty much all the same. Also known as “bastard pop,” a bootleg is a song that’s “mashed-up.” Usually, this means the vocal track of one song is mixed over the instrumentation of another. Using audio editing software, DJs and mashup artists combine different artists and musical genres to create new and unique songs that are often greater than the sum of their parts. Imagine Michael Jackson rocking out with Nirvana, Britney Spears singing with Daft Punk, Cher fronting AC/DC, or Ludacris rapping with Depeche Mode. Can’t imagine that? Then get your ass to Bootie to hear for yourself!

There have been two of these nights so far in Brisbane and both have been awesomely good fun. Even folk who were making an effort to not enjoy themselves ended up dancing on the pool tables until 3am (I am looking at you WIFE).

A big thanks to Brisbane’s resident Canalien (oh a Buscast reference!) Smitch or as he probably prefers to be known as online Viper Pilot for taking me along to the launch night. Not sure either of us expected to be staying up quite so far past our bedtimes. Me being very fragile and him being one of the primary carers of a small mammal. Viper Pilot is a talented masher himself and now DJ’s at the night. Do clicky on his name ‘o’ link for his (better than mine) blog and some of his mashery.

If you are lucky another game of musical hats will occur and if you are really lucky you may get a chance to wear Gabe’s Hat. (pictured below).
